Albany, NY — August 1, 2025
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that the Interborough Express (IBX) transit project is officially moving from the planning stage into active development, marking a significant milestone in New York’s transportation infrastructure.
The IBX will be a 14-mile light rail line connecting Brooklyn and Queens, designed to reduce travel times by up to 30 minutes and serve nearly 900,000 residents and 260,000 workers along the corridor. The project will feature 19 new stations, linking 17 subway lines, 50 bus routes, and 2 Long Island Rail Road stations—all without passing through Manhattan.
“Building the Interborough Express will transform New York, connecting communities like never before,” said Governor Hochul. “Thanks to the funding secured in the MTA’s Capital Plan, we’re not just talking about it—we’re getting it done.”
The MTA Board has approved a joint venture between Jacobs and HDR to lead the engineering and design phase. The IBX will be built along an existing freight line owned by MTA LIRR and CSX Corp, stretching from Sunset Park in Brooklyn to Jackson Heights in Queens.
This marks the first new end-to-end rapid transit line built entirely within New York City since 1937, and the first new transit stations in Brooklyn and Queens in decades.
