Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has welcomed emerging diplomatic openings in Ukraine, calling recent developments “a positive shift” after months of military stalemate. In a statement released by her office, Meloni emphasized that any peace agreement must be led and defined by Ukraine itself.

“The road to peace is complex, but it’s crucial that it has finally been taken,” Meloni said, underscoring the importance of robust security guarantees to prevent future aggression from Russia.

She praised the recent summit in Anchorage, where U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed an Italian proposal modeled on NATO’s Article 5. The plan outlines a collective security clause that would obligate Ukraine’s international partners—including the United States—to respond decisively if Ukraine faces renewed attacks.

Meloni reiterated that only Ukraine has the right to negotiate the terms of peace and determine the future of its territory. She also stressed that European nations remain united in their support for Ukraine during this critical phase of negotiations.
