President Donald J. Trump has issued a Presidential Permit authorizing Cameron County, Texas, to construct, maintain, and operate a new pedestrian border crossing at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville. The move aims to modernize infrastructure, improve inspection facilities, and enhance cross-border mobility between the United States and Mexico.

The permit outlines strict environmental, legal, and operational conditions, including:

  • Compliance with federal and state laws
  • Mitigation of environmental impacts
  • Coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the General Services Administration
  • Diplomatic clearance from the Government of Mexico
  • A five-year construction window before expiration

The new pedestrian bridge will run parallel to the existing Gateway International Bridge and is designed to support northbound and southbound foot traffic. Cameron County is responsible for funding construction, inspection facilities, and long-term maintenance — all at no cost to the federal government.

The permit also mandates transparency in ownership transfers, environmental compliance, and operational updates. If the bridge ceases to function as an international crossing, the permit will be revoked.
