UK Expands Electric Car Grant Scheme: Drivers Can Save Up to £3,750 on Six New EV Models

In a major boost to Britain’s electric vehicle (EV) transition, the UK government has added six new models to its Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme, offering drivers savings of up to £3,750. The announcement, made on August 28, 2025, marks a strategic move to make EV ownership more affordable while accelerating growth in the UK’s automotive sector.

🚗 New Models, Bigger Discounts

The newly eligible vehicles include two Ford models—Puma Gen-E and e-Tourneo Courier—both qualifying for the scheme’s maximum discount of £3,750. Four additional models from PEUGEOT and DS Automobiles are also included, each offering a £1,500 grant:

With these additions, the ECG scheme now covers 28 EV models, reflecting a significant expansion aimed at reducing upfront costs—a key barrier for many consumers considering the switch to electric.

🔋 Driving Demand and Economic Growth

According to Autotrader, interest in ECG-eligible vehicles has surged by up to 80%, underscoring the scheme’s impact on consumer behavior. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader £650 million government investment to “put money back in people’s pockets” and stimulate competition in the EV market.

The UK’s EV sector, which supports over 133,000 direct jobs and 320,000 in the wider economy, is central to the country’s modern Industrial Strategy. The ECG scheme complements other government efforts, including a £63 million charging infrastructure package and the £381 million Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, which aims to install over 100,000 new public charging points.

Industry Response

Ford UK Chair Lisa Brankin welcomed the move, noting that the full grant recognition reflects Ford’s commitment to sustainability. PEUGEOT UK’s Nicola Dobson highlighted the brand’s expanded electric lineup, now offering six models under the grant scheme, making EVs more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

AA President Edmund King and Autotrader’s Ian Plummer both praised the scheme’s potential to bridge the affordability gap, with Plummer noting that interest in EVs priced below £37,000 has nearly doubled since the grant’s expansion.

🌍 What’s Next

More EV models are expected to be added in the coming weeks as manufacturers meet the scheme’s sustainability criteria. With Britain already leading Europe in EV adoption, the ECG scheme is poised to further cement the UK’s role as a global frontrunner in clean mobility.
