England’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 squad raised eyebrows with the absence of veteran pacer Kate Cross—a mainstay of the national side. While Nat Sciver-Brunt, newly appointed captain, wasn’t part of the selection panel, she acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision.
“Being left out is never easy, especially for someone who’s been a core part of our team for so long,” Sciver-Brunt told PA News. “It’s tough, but it also shows the depth we’re building as a squad.”
Sciver-Brunt emphasized that such difficult choices are a sign of progress for England’s women’s cricket, where competition for places is fierce and the talent pool continues to grow.
“We want to be in a place where every squad selection sparks debate. That means we’re evolving. In a roundabout way, it’s a positive.”
Having taken over the captaincy from Heather Knight in March, Sciver-Brunt now leads England’s charge for a fifth World Cup title. Despite managing an Achilles injury during the home summer, she’s eager to resume bowling duties at the tournament.
“I’ve been bowling in practice and feeling great. I love contributing in every facet, and I’m excited to be back with the ball,” she said at the launch of the Sage Small Business XI initiative.
England’s World Cup campaign begins October 3 in Guwahati, where they face South Africa in their opening match.
