Despite daunting geography and limited infrastructure, Papua New Guinea’s U-16 men’s national team made a remarkable run at the OFC Championship—thanks in part to strategic backing from the FIFA Forward programme.

As the most populous member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), PNG faces unique logistical hurdles: scattered islands, mountainous terrain, and limited road access make national team coordination a challenge. Yet, the team defied expectations by qualifying for the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Honiara, Solomon Islands—for the first time in seven years.

After a strong showing, PNG narrowly missed a historic qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026™. They fell 2-0 to defending champions New Zealand in the semi-final, and were edged out by Fiji in the third-place playoff.

🏟️ Their preparation was anchored at the newly renovated PNG Football Association headquarters in Port Moresby, a facility upgraded with nearly USD 500,000 in FIFA Forward funding. An additional USD 110,000 supported travel and accommodation for the tournament.

“This milestone was unexpected but deeply meaningful,” said PNGFA General Secretary Ahmjad Tekwie. “FIFA’s support allowed our young athletes to compete with dignity and professionalism.”

The FIFA Forward initiative, which now offers up to USD 8 million per Member Association (2023–26), has elevated competitiveness across the Pacific. New Zealand U-16 coach Martin Bullock praised the region’s progress, citing improved player development and identification programmes.

PNG’s momentum continues with the upcoming OFC U-19 Women’s Championship later this month, as the nation builds on its youth football foundation.
