The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has voiced deep concern over intensifying Israeli military operations in northern Gaza, including Gaza City, and warned of catastrophic consequences if annexation plans for parts of the West Bank proceed.

Ajith Sunghay, Head of OHCHR’s Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, reported widespread destruction of residential areas in North Gaza and northeastern Gaza City, resulting in mounting civilian casualties and mass displacement. Between August 26 and September 1, local health authorities recorded 816 Palestinian deaths nearly double the previous week’s toll.

With nearly one million Palestinians still trapped in northern Gaza, Sunghay emphasized the lack of safe zones and the dangers of movement. Humanitarian workers are unable to reach many civilians, especially in eastern Gaza City, while aid convoys continue to face attacks across the enclave.

The OHCHR also condemned reported Israeli plans to “extend sovereignty” over parts of the occupied West Bank. Citing the International Court of Justice’s 2024 ruling, Sunghay stated that Israel’s ongoing settlement expansion and infrastructure development amount to de facto annexation.

He warned that formal annexation would severely impact Palestinians’ rights, accelerate settlement growth, and lead to further land expropriation, home demolitions, and political disenfranchisement. “Any declaration of sovereignty extension would place Palestinians at imminent risk of expulsion,” Sunghay said.
