Brazil celebrated its Independence Day on 7 September 2025, commemorating 203 years since the country declared freedom from Portuguese colonial rule in 1822. Known locally as Sete de Setembro, the day is one of the most significant national holidays in South America’s largest country.
Major cities including Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo hosted parades, concerts, and cultural performances. The official ceremony in Brasília featured military displays, flag hoisting, and a presidential address emphasizing unity, sovereignty, and Brazil’s role in shaping a multipolar global order.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received congratulatory messages from world leaders, including Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who praised Brazil’s commitment to peaceful diplomacy, free trade, and regional leadership.
Across the country, families gathered for traditional meals, street festivals, and fireworks. The day also saw reflections on Brazil’s historic Cry of Ipiranga, when Prince Pedro declared independence with the words “Independência ou Morte” (Independence or Death), marking the end of over three centuries of colonial rule.
Celebrations extended beyond Brazil’s borders, with Brazilian communities in cities like Doha hosting themed events, samba performances, and culinary showcases.
