New York, As the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary, General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock called for bold reforms to ensure the organization remains relevant and resilient in a rapidly changing world.
Speaking ahead of high level week, Baerbock emphasized the enduring importance of the UN Charter, describing it as “our life insurance” and a guiding force for global cooperation. Her presidency’s theme, “Better Together,” reflects the belief that no single nation can tackle today’s borderless challenges alone.
She urged member states to advance the UN80 reform agenda, guide the selection of the next Secretary General, and implement the Pact for the Future, adopted last September. Key global issues—including conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Haiti, as well as climate change and technological disruption require urgent, united action.
Baerbock also reaffirmed support for a two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stating that “endless war, continued occupation and terror” cannot bring lasting peace. Additional high-level meetings will address women’s rights, youth empowerment, mental health, and the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
