Brussels
Following President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address, the European Commission has formally proposed suspending certain trade-related provisions of the EU–Israel Association Agreement. The move signals a sharp shift in Europe’s stance on the escalating violence in the region.
The Commission also introduced targeted sanctions against:
- Hamas, for its role in terrorism and destabilization
- Extremist Israeli ministers, accused of inciting violence
- Violent settlers, involved in attacks on Palestinian civilians
This dual-action proposal reflects the EU’s commitment to human rights, international law, and regional stability. Officials emphasized that the measures aim to hold all actors accountable—whether state or non-state—for actions that undermine peace and violate humanitarian norms.
A Moral and Strategic Stand
The European Commission’s statement underscores the need for proportionality, restraint, and respect for international agreements. It calls on all parties to de-escalate and recommit to diplomacy, while reaffirming Europe’s role as a principled mediator in global conflicts.
