The European Union has issued a strong statement condemning Israel’s recent closure of the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge crossing, warning that the move threatens humanitarian access and deepens the crisis in Gaza.
🔒 Border Closure Sparks Alarm Over Aid Disruption
On September 23, Israeli authorities shut down the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge for both passenger and cargo traffic. The crossing—vital for movement between the West Bank and Jordan—is also a key route for humanitarian aid entering Gaza via the UN’s 2720 mechanism.
While passenger access resumed on September 26, cargo traffic remains blocked. The EU is urging Israel to reopen the crossing fully, stressing that “border crossings must remain open for an effective humanitarian response.”
🆘 Gaza Crisis Worsens Amid Ground Offensive
The EU’s statement comes as Israel intensifies its ground offensive in Gaza City, aggravating what the bloc calls “a catastrophic and unsustainable humanitarian situation.” Civilian casualties are mounting, and medical facilities are reportedly under threat.
The EU reiterated that “medical facilities should never be targeted” and called on Israel to take “immediate and effective measures” to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza.
💬 EU Reaffirms Support for International Law
The statement also condemned the September 18 attack at the crossing and reminded Israel that while it has the right to defend itself, such actions must comply with international law.
“The full respect for international humanitarian law is not optional—it is an obligation,” the EU emphasized.
🕊️ Ceasefire and Hostage Release Urged
In a final appeal, the EU called for restraint, an immediate ceasefire, and the unconditional release of all hostages. The bloc’s High Representative stressed that only through diplomacy and adherence to legal norms can the region move toward peace.
