New York, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has called on member states to reinforce their commitment to UN peacekeeping missions, warning that global instability and shrinking resources threaten the effectiveness of operations in conflict zones.

Speaking at a high-level meeting during the UN General Assembly, Lacroix emphasized the need for political backing, predictable funding, and modernized mandates to ensure peacekeepers can respond to evolving threats. He highlighted the importance of local engagement, protection of civilians, and the integration of women and youth in peacebuilding efforts.

The meeting brought together diplomats, military leaders, and civil society representatives to assess the future of UN peacekeeping amid rising violence, geopolitical fragmentation, and humanitarian crises.

Lacroix stressed that peacekeeping remains a vital tool for international stability, but must be adapted to today’s realities, including digital threats, climate-related insecurity, and complex regional dynamics.
