Brussels, The European Commission has released its latest assessment of Estonia and Slovakia’s updated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), noting significant improvements in both countries’ commitments to the EU’s 2030 climate and energy targets.

The revised NECPs show enhanced ambition in renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency measures, and greenhouse gas reduction strategies. Estonia has strengthened its roadmap for phasing out oil shale and expanding wind and solar capacity, while Slovakia has outlined clearer pathways for decarbonizing industry and improving building energy performance.

The Commission welcomed the increased transparency and stakeholder engagement in both plans, emphasizing that these updates contribute to the EU’s collective goal of reducing emissions by at least 55% by 2030 under the European Green Deal.

However, the assessment also identified areas needing further detail, including financing mechanisms, implementation timelines, and cross-border cooperation. Both countries are encouraged to refine their plans ahead of the final NECP submissions due by June 2024.
