The European Union issued a joint statement from High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, expressing concern over recent developments in Georgia and reaffirming the EU’s commitment to the country’s European aspirations.
The statement addressed the Georgian Parliament’s decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zourabichvili, citing it as a troubling move that risks undermining democratic institutions and political stability. The EU emphasized that such actions could jeopardize Georgia’s progress toward EU membership, especially as the country awaits a key decision on its candidate status.
Kallas and Várhelyi urged Georgian leaders to prioritize national unity and democratic values, stressing that internal political divisions should not derail the country’s strategic goals. They reiterated that the EU remains a steadfast partner to the Georgian people and continues to support reforms that align with European standards.
The statement also called on all political actors in Georgia to engage in constructive dialogue and uphold the principles of rule of law, transparency, and respect for democratic processes. As Georgia stands at a critical juncture in its EU integration journey, the EU’s message was clear: political cohesion and institutional integrity are essential for moving forward.
