Brussels, The European Commission’s latest Employment and Social Developments report reveals steady progress in job quality and wage growth across the EU, while highlighting persistent challenges in gender equality, youth employment, and in-work poverty.

According to the report, the EU employment rate reached a record high of 75.5% in 2023, with over 213 million people employed. Real wages increased in most Member States, helping offset inflation and improve living standards. The share of workers with permanent contracts and access to training also rose, signaling improved job stability and career development.

However, the report warns that structural inequalities remain. The gender pay gap continues to affect women, especially in high-skill sectors. Youth unemployment remains elevated in several countries, and nearly 10% of workers face in-work poverty, particularly those in part-time or temporary roles.

The Commission is urging Member States to strengthen social protection systems, invest in lifelong learning, and promote inclusive labour market policies to ensure fair opportunities for all.
