Rome Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attended the solemn funeral of three Carabinieri officers who lost their lives in an explosion in the province of Trapani, Sicily. The ceremony, held in Marsala, honored Marshal Major Antonino Marino, Marshal Chief Francesco Pio D’Aleo, and Carabiniere Scelto Giuseppe Montalto, who died while responding to a suspected illegal weapons cache.

The explosion occurred during a routine inspection of a rural property believed to be linked to organized crime. Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible act of sabotage.

In her remarks, Meloni expressed deep sorrow and gratitude for the officers’ sacrifice. “They died serving the Republic, defending the values of legality and justice,” she said. She pledged continued support for law enforcement and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating mafia networks and violent extremism.

The funeral was attended by senior officials, military representatives, and grieving families. Flags were flown at half-mast across Italy, and a national moment of silence was observed.

The tragedy has reignited calls for enhanced safety protocols and intelligence coordination in high-risk operations. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced a review of procedures and additional resources for frontline officers.
