Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen traveled to Slovenia to participate in the MED9 Summit, a high-level gathering of leaders from nine Southern European Union countries. The summit focused on advancing regional cooperation, climate resilience, and strategic autonomy within the EU’s southern flank.

Hosted by Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, the MED9 group includes Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain. Leaders discussed shared priorities ahead of the European Council meeting on 26–27 October, including:

  • Climate adaptation and energy transition in Mediterranean regions
  • Migration management and border security
  • Economic competitiveness and digital innovation
  • EU enlargement and neighborhood policy, with a focus on the Western Balkans

President von der Leyen emphasized the importance of Mediterranean solidarity, stating, “The MED9 countries are at the frontline of many of Europe’s challenges and opportunities. Together, we shape a stronger, more resilient Union.”

The summit also addressed the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with calls for de-escalation and coordinated EU aid efforts. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a unified European response to global crises. The MED9 format continues to serve as a strategic platform for amplifying southern EU voices in Brussels, particularly on climate, migration, and regional development.
