Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Court of Auditors for refusing to register a key government resolution related to the Messina Strait Bridge, calling the move “an intolerable intrusion into the decisions of the Government and Parliament.”

The resolution, approved by the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS) on October 29, 2025, concerns the long-debated infrastructure project aimed at connecting Sicily to mainland Italy. The Court of Auditors declined to register the resolution, citing procedural concerns, including the use of digital links for document transmission.

Meloni dismissed the objections as outdated and unfounded. “As if the judges of the Court of Auditors ignored the existence of computers,” she remarked, adding that all technical issues had already been addressed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Presidency of the Council.

The Prime Minister framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of judicial overreach, stating, “This is yet another example of judicial power invading the choices of the Government and Parliament.” She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to institutional reform, citing two pending legislative packages one on constitutional justice and another on the Court of Auditors—currently under Senate review.

“These reforms are the most appropriate response to what has happened,” Meloni said. “We will continue to act, with the support of Parliament, to carry out the commitments made with citizens.”

The Messina Bridge project has long been a symbol of Italy’s infrastructural ambition, with successive governments debating its feasibility, environmental impact, and strategic value. Meloni’s administration views the bridge as a cornerstone of national development and regional integration.
