California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging its decision to revoke $4 billion in federal grants for the state’s high-speed rail project. The lawsuit accuses federal officials of breaching legal agreements and undermining a crucial infrastructure initiative that’s already created over 15,000 jobs.
The rail line, currently under construction across 171 miles in the Central Valley, is the nation’s only active bullet train project. Officials say more than 50 major structures have been completed, and track laying is about to begin.
The administration cited delays and budget concerns, but Newsom countered that the project remains federally compliant and crucial to California’s clean energy and mobility goals. “This is not just about trains—it’s about vision, jobs, and the future of American infrastructure,” Newsom said.
The lawsuit demands reinstatement of the grants and aims to block further federal interference as construction moves forward.
