At the funeral service for NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Governor Kathy Hochul delivered a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on the officer’s courage, sacrifice, and the deep pain felt by his family, the Bangladeshi community, and the entire city of New York.
Speaking to mourners at Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx, Hochul described Islam as a protector who gave his life to shield others. Quoting the Quran, she said, “Whoever saves a life, it is as if they saved all of humanity,” emphasizing the officer’s selfless service. Islam, who was off-duty but working a security detail when he was fatally shot, was remembered as a devoted father, husband, and son.
Governor Hochul urged New Yorkers to support the NYPD not only in times of tragedy but every day, recognizing the risks officers take to keep communities safe. She also called on the Bangladeshi community to lean on the broader New York family during this time of grief.
The ceremony was marked by solemnity and unity, with thousands of officers lining the streets in silent salute. Islam was posthumously promoted to detective first grade, a gesture honoring his dedication and bravery.
