The United States Coast Guard marked its 235th anniversary this August, commemorating more than two centuries of maritime service, national defense, and lifesaving missions. Established in 1790 under the direction of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, the Coast Guard began with ten revenue cutters tasked with enforcing trade laws and safeguarding the young nation’s economic interests.
⚓ A Legacy of Valor
Today, the Coast Guard stands as one of America’s six armed services, known for its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and securing the nation’s waterways. From intercepting drug shipments and responding to natural disasters, to conducting search-and-rescue operations and defending the homeland, Coast Guardsmen operate in some of the most challenging environments.
This year’s presidential message highlighted the service’s achievements, including:
- Over 240,000 pounds of cocaine seized in the first half of 2025—a dramatic increase over last year
- Swift rescue operations during the catastrophic floods in Central Texas, saving hundreds of lives
🛡️ Looking Ahead
Acting Commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday and Master Chief Petty Officer Phillip Waldron called this milestone a “defining moment” in Coast Guard history. With major investments through Force Design 2028, the service is transforming into a more agile and responsive force, ready to meet future challenges head-on.
🎖️ Semper Paratus
As the Coast Guard celebrates 235 years of dedication, Americans honor the brave men and women who live by the motto: Semper Paratus—Always Ready.
