In a swift diplomatic move, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for an urgent virtual meeting of EU foreign ministers to be held Monday afternoon. The session comes as global attention intensifies around proposed negotiations between the United States and Russia concerning the war in Ukraine.

Kallas emphasized that any potential agreement between Washington and Moscow must include both Ukraine and the European Union, framing the issue as central to the continent’s long-term security. “International law is unequivocal—territories under temporary occupation remain part of Ukraine,” she stated, warning against any settlement that could embolden future aggression or undermine European stability.

The meeting will also touch on developments in the Middle East, including the situation in Gaza, as EU leaders seek to align their positions ahead of high-level talks involving U.S. and Russian officials later this week.

Recent statements from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have reinforced the stance that Kyiv must be directly involved in any peace negotiations. European leaders, including those from France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, have echoed this sentiment, asserting that peace cannot be brokered without Ukraine’s full participation.

As geopolitical dynamics shift, the EU’s proactive engagement signals its intent to remain a central voice in shaping the future of regional and global security.
