August 9, 2025 — Marking five years since Belarus’s disputed 2020 presidential election, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement denouncing the Lukashenko regime’s continued repression of civil liberties and political dissent.
The three nations condemned the Belarusian government’s systematic dismantling of independent media, civil society, and opposition movements since the controversial vote. Thousands of citizens have reportedly faced arbitrary detention, torture, or exile—actions described as clear violations of international law and fundamental human rights.
The statement also criticized Belarus’s alignment with Russia’s war in Ukraine, calling it a threat to global peace and security. While acknowledging the recent release of several political prisoners, the governments expressed deep concern over the ongoing persecution of activists and journalists. More than 1,100 individuals remain imprisoned for political reasons.
Australia, Canada, and the UK called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees and urged Belarusian authorities to halt their campaign of repression. The statement reaffirmed their commitment to defending human rights and supporting the Belarusian people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom.
