Phnom Penh, August 2, 2025 — The Cambodian government has officially declared its intention to nominate former U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his pivotal role in brokering a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand following a deadly border conflict.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol confirmed the nomination during a press briefing, crediting Trump’s direct phone diplomacy for facilitating a peace agreement negotiated in Malaysia on July 28. The five-day conflict, which marked the most intense fighting between the two nations in over a decade, resulted in 43 fatalities and displaced more than 300,000 people on both sides of the border.
“President Trump made it happen. Give him the Nobel Peace Prize,” stated White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In addition to his diplomatic intervention, Cambodia praised Trump for reducing U.S. tariffs on Cambodian garments and footwear from 49% to 19%, a move Chanthol described as essential to safeguarding the country’s economic stability.
This nomination follows similar endorsements from Pakistan and Israel. Pakistan previously cited Trump’s role in de-escalating tensions with India, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated him for his involvement in the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
While critics have raised concerns about the Nobel Committee’s political impartiality, Cambodia’s endorsement adds to Trump’s growing list of international peace initiatives. The final decision on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee later this year.
