The Principality of Andorra marked its National Day today with vibrant celebrations honoring Our Lady of Meritxell, the country’s patron saint. Citizens gathered across the microstate to pay tribute to the centuries-old legend of the Virgin Mary’s apparition, a symbol of Andorran identity and spiritual heritage.
The day began with a solemn mass at the Sanctuary of Meritxell, followed by cultural performances, traditional dances and public exhibitions reflecting Andorra’s rich Catalan roots. Government offices and schools remained closed as families participated in community events and pilgrimages.
This year’s observance also coincides with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Andorra and several global partners, underscoring the country’s growing role in European affairs and digital infrastructure development.
The legend of Meritxell dates back to the 12th century, when villagers discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary beneath a blooming wild rose in winter a miraculous sign that led to the founding of the original chapel, later rebuilt after a fire in 1972.
