WIESBADEN, Germany — Jeff Wertz, Director of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) for IMCOM-Europe, has been awarded the prestigious Norman H. Marcus Award—an honor that carries deep personal significance for the longtime Army civilian and veteran.

Wertz’s journey began in 1979 as a 19-year-old legal clerk stationed in Frankfurt. After a brief break in service, he returned as a postal clerk in Offenbach, eventually transitioning into civilian service in the same role. Over the next four decades, Wertz held leadership positions across Europe and Asia, including Camp Darby (Italy), Bamberg and Wuerzburg (Germany), USAG Japan, and Camp Yongsan (Korea).

The award was presented during the IMCOM-Europe Garrison Leaders’ Working Group, where colleagues praised Wertz’s unwavering dedication and mentorship. IMCOM-Europe Director Tommy Mize described him as “a great teammate to each and every one of us,” highlighting his responsiveness and support across garrisons.

For Wertz, the recognition is deeply personal. Years ago, a persistent phone call from Norm Marcus himself led him to accept a role in Italy that transformed his career. “That call changed my life,” Wertz recalled. “And now I receive an award in his name. It’s absolutely incredible.”

Known for his humility and hands-on leadership, Wertz continues to inspire emerging leaders across the Army’s FMWR community. “The best part of my job,” he said, “is all of it.”
