Santiago, Chile is celebrating its 215th Independence Anniversary, marking the historic moment in 1810 when the country declared autonomy from Spanish rule. The day kicks off the beloved Fiestas Patrias, a two-day national celebration filled with tradition, pride, and vibrant cultural displays.

Across the country, streets are adorned with red, white, and blue, echoing the colors of the Chilean flag. Families gather for asados (barbecues), dance the cueca, and enjoy local favorites like empanadas, chicha, and anticuchos. In Santiago, the Military Parade in Parque O’Higgins drew thousands, with President Gabriel Boric presiding over the ceremony honoring Chile’s armed forces.

September 18 commemorates the formation of the First National Government Junta, a pivotal step toward full independence achieved a decade later. The following day, September 19, is known as the Day of the Glories of the Chilean Army, rounding out the national holiday.

This year’s celebrations also spotlight Chile’s growing global role in sustainable mining, digital innovation, and regional diplomacy, with leaders reaffirming the country’s commitment to democracy and economic development.
