England’s hopes of reclaiming the Ashes on Australian soil have received a major lift as Test captain Ben Stokes returned to training following a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth Test against India in July.

Stokes, 34, was spotted batting in the nets with Durham County Cricket Club, signaling strong progress in his recovery. Durham coach Ryan Campbell confirmed the all-rounder had a “really good session,” though noted that his bowling workload would be managed cautiously.

“The batting side of things is going very well, but the bowling will take a lot longer,” Campbell told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Stokes’ availability is seen as pivotal for England, who haven’t won an Ashes series in Australia since 2011. His leadership and all-round capabilities are expected to anchor the squad when the five-match series begins in Perth on November 21.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Mark Wood is also on the mend after a knee injury suffered during the ICC Champions Trophy. He’s expected to play a red-ball match for Durham next week to prove his fitness.

In a strategic move, England has withdrawn Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith from the upcoming T20I series against South Africa to keep them fresh for the Ashes. Head coach Brendon McCullum emphasized the need for rest, joking,

Even Phar Lap needed a paddock break.

With key players regaining fitness and preparations intensifying, England’s Ashes campaign is beginning to take shape—fueling hopes of a historic comeback Down Under.
