Brussels/Addis Ababa: The European Union and Ethiopia have announced a major step forward in their strategic partnership, unveiling new trade and investment initiatives during the Global Gateway Forum 2025.
The announcement was made by Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen and Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, who reaffirmed their shared commitment to sustainable development, economic resilience, and regional stability.

- Launch of a new investment framework to attract European businesses to Ethiopiaâs manufacturing, agriculture, and green energy sectors.
- Expansion of infrastructure cooperation, including transport corridors and digital connectivity under the EUâs Global Gateway strategy.
- Support for job creation and skills development, especially for youth and women, through targeted vocational training and entrepreneurship programs.
- Strengthening of climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy projects to boost Ethiopiaâs green transition.
Commissioner Urpilainen emphasized that Ethiopia is a âkey partnerâ in the Horn of Africa and praised its reform efforts and potential for inclusive growth. Minister Shide welcomed the EUâs support and highlighted Ethiopiaâs commitment to improving the investment climate and regional integration.
The EU also pledged continued humanitarian and development assistance, while encouraging Ethiopia to uphold democratic reforms and human rights protections.
This renewed partnership reflects the EUâs broader strategy to build equitable, long-term relationships with African nations through the Global Gateway a âŹ300 billion initiative aimed at connecting Europe with the world through sustainable infrastructure and investment.
