The European Union and São Tomé and Príncipe signed a renewed Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) and its implementing protocol, reinforcing their commitment to responsible ocean governance and regional cooperation.
The updated agreement allows EU vessels to continue fishing in São Tomé and Príncipe’s waters under strict sustainability conditions. It supports the country’s efforts to manage marine resources effectively while contributing to its blue economy and food security.
In return, São Tomé and Príncipe will receive financial support from the EU to strengthen fisheries monitoring, scientific research, and local infrastructure. The partnership also promotes transparency, environmental protection, and fair access to resources.
This renewal reflects the EU’s broader strategy to foster sustainable fisheries partnerships with coastal states, ensuring long-term ecological balance and economic development in line with international standards.
