The European Commission launched a new strategy to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across scientific disciplines, positioning AI as a cornerstone of future research innovation.

The initiative, titled “A European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science”, is supported by a comprehensive report from the Joint Research Centre (JRC) that outlines how AI is reshaping the scientific process—from data analysis to hypothesis generation. The strategy also introduces the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) and announces the creation of an AI Evaluation Hub to monitor and assess AI tools in key research domains.

🔍 Key Insights from the JRC Report:

  • The EU leads globally in AI research, with 13% of AI-active institutions, surpassing the US (4%) and China (1).
  • AI is already transforming fields like protein structure prediction, material discovery, and computational humanities, driving faster and more accurate breakthroughs.
  • Scientists are using AI for semantic search, context-aware discovery, and drug development, especially in life sciences.

🏗️ Strategic Priorities:

  • Invest in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI Factories to support scalable, collaborative innovation.
  • Promote open science infrastructure to ensure reproducibility and trust.
  • Build hybrid research teams that combine AI expertise with domain-specific knowledge.
  • Develop policies to attract and retain interdisciplinary talent, keeping human insight central to scientific progress.

The strategy aligns with broader EU goals outlined in the Clean Industrial Deal and EU Competitiveness Compass, reinforcing the role of AI in advancing sustainability, resilience, and global leadership in science and technology.
