In a major public health move, the UK government has announced that children across England will receive free protection against chickenpox for the first time, beginning January 2026. The new initiative will see the combined MMRV vaccine — covering measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) — added to the NHS’s routine childhood immunisation schedule.

💉 What’s Changing?

  • Eligible children will be offered the MMRV vaccine during regular GP visits.
  • The programme is expected to protect around 500,000 children annually.
  • This marks the first addition to the routine childhood vaccine schedule since the MenB vaccine was introduced in 2015.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Why It Matters

Chickenpox, often seen as a mild illness, can lead to serious complications like bacterial infections, pneumonia, and even stroke. The rollout aims to:

  • Reduce school and nursery absences
  • Ease the burden on working parents
  • Save the NHS an estimated £15 million per year
  • Prevent productivity losses estimated at £24 million annually

🌍 Proven Success Abroad

Countries like the US, Canada, Germany, and Australia have already adopted the chickenpox vaccine into their national programmes — with significant drops in cases and hospital admissions.

🗣️ Voices Behind the Rollout

Stephen Kinnock MP, Minister of State for Care, emphasized that the vaccine empowers families and supports children’s health and education.
Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, from the UK Health Security Agency, highlighted the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, calling it a potential lifesaver for vulnerable children.
Amanda Doyle, NHS England’s Primary Care Director, called the rollout a “hugely positive moment” for families nationwide.

🧒 What Parents Need to Know

  • GP surgeries will contact parents of eligible children to schedule appointments.
  • Clinical guidance will outline which age groups qualify and when.
  • The vaccine, previously available only privately at around £150 for two doses, will now be free of charge.

🏥 Part of a Bigger Plan

This vaccination programme is part of the government’s broader 10 Year Health Plan, which includes expanded access to vaccines, mental health support, dental care, and free school meals. It also aligns with the rollout of Best Start Family Hubs, designed to support families and give children the strongest start in life.
