Orange County, NY New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the successful completion of a $36.6 million pavement improvement project along a critical stretch of the New York State Thruway (I-87) in Orange County, enhancing safety, durability, and driving conditions for thousands of daily commuters and freight carriers.
The project covered approximately 13 miles between Exit 16 (Harriman) and Exit 17 (Newburgh), a high-traffic corridor vital to regional commerce and tourism. Crews replaced worn pavement with new asphalt designed for long-term resilience, improved drainage systems, and upgraded lane markings to meet modern safety standards.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of infrastructure investment in supporting economic growth and public safety. “This project is a testament to our commitment to maintaining world-class transportation networks across New York State,” she said.
The Thruway Authority noted that the improvements were completed on time and within budget, with minimal disruption to traffic. The upgraded corridor is expected to reduce maintenance costs and improve fuel efficiency for vehicles traveling the route.
This initiative is part of a broader $397 million capital investment in Thruway infrastructure statewide for 2025, including bridge rehabilitation, service area modernization, and environmental sustainability upgrades.
