Albany, NY New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the full restoration of Amtrak’s Adirondack Line, reconnecting New York City and Montreal for the first time since pandemic-era disruptions. The announcement also included plans for significant infrastructure upgrades to enhance speed, reliability, and passenger experience along the route.

The service restoration follows extensive coordination between Amtrak, New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), and Canadian authorities, resolving long-standing customs and infrastructure challenges that had delayed the line’s full reopening.

Key highlights from the announcement include:

  • Resumption of daily service between New York City and Montreal, with stops in Albany, Saratoga Springs, Ticonderoga, and Plattsburgh
  • Track and signal improvements to reduce travel time and increase safety
  • Station upgrades in key upstate cities to improve accessibility and amenities
  • Cross-border coordination to streamline customs and immigration procedures

Governor Hochul emphasized the economic and cultural importance of the route, stating, “Restoring this vital connection strengthens our ties with Canada, boosts tourism, and supports communities across the North Country.”

The Adirondack Line is considered one of the most scenic rail journeys in North America, running along the Hudson River Valley and Lake Champlain. Its return is expected to benefit local economies, especially in tourism-dependent regions.

The Governor also announced a $50 million investment in additional rail modernization projects across the state, including electrification studies and climate-resilient infrastructure.
