Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is set to meet with Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Varsen Aghabekian in Rome, marking a significant diplomatic engagement amid ongoing regional tensions.

The meeting follows Italy’s recent joint declaration with Saudi Arabia, reaffirming a shared commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity across the Middle East.

During the bilateral talks, Minister Tajani is expected to reiterate Italy’s firm opposition to the occupation of Gaza and the annexation of the West Bank—actions viewed as direct threats to the viability of a two-state solution.

Italy’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza will also be highlighted, particularly under the “Food For Gaza” initiative. Since October 7, 2023, Italy has delivered over 200 tons of essential supplies—including food, medical aid, and hygiene products—and facilitated the evacuation of more than 1,000 Palestinians. Among those assisted are over 180 children who have received medical care in Italy.

Following the diplomatic meeting, Ministers Tajani and Aghabekian will visit three Roman hospitals—Policlinico Umberto I, Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, and Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli—where several Gazan children are currently receiving treatment. They will be joined by Italy’s Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, along with hospital leadership.

  • Policlinico Umberto I has treated four Palestinian minors.
  • Bambino Gesù has cared for 25 children, many of whom have already been discharged. The ministers will meet those recently evacuated on August 13.
  • At Policlinico Gemelli, the delegation will also meet a Palestinian doctor who arrived in Italy in June via a humanitarian corridor to begin her postgraduate medical training.

This visit underscores Italy’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian support and diplomatic dialogue in pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
