Brussels,On the sidelines of the European Council summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convened an informal meeting with EU leaders to explore new approaches to migration management. The gathering focused on strengthening partnerships with African nations, enhancing border controls, and streamlining asylum procedures across member states.
Meloni emphasized the need for “pragmatic and forward-looking solutions” that balance humanitarian responsibilities with national security. The leaders discussed expanding the EU’s external action tools, including development aid and strategic investments, to address root causes of migration and reduce irregular flows.
The meeting also spotlighted Italy’s proposal for a European Migration Compact, which would coordinate efforts among EU institutions, frontline states, and third countries. Key elements include faster repatriation mechanisms, joint border surveillance, and legal migration pathways tailored to labor market needs.
While no formal conclusions were adopted, the dialogue marked a shift toward more cohesive and operational EU migration policy. Participants agreed to continue consultations ahead of the next Justice and Home Affairs Council.
This initiative aligns with Italy’s broader push for a “Europe of results” a vision that prioritizes tangible outcomes over bureaucratic gridlock.
