High-Level Dialogue Amid Regional Shifts
On September 2, Japan’s Foreign Minister Mr. Iwaya Takeshi held a 35-minute phone conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister H.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud. The call took place while Mr. Iwaya was in Kuwait for the Japan-GCC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which Prince Faisal could not attend due to urgent duties.
Celebrating 70 Years of Bilateral Relations
Minister Iwaya highlighted the significance of ongoing high-level exchanges between Japan and Saudi Arabia, especially in the context of their 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the depth of recent dialogues and committed to maintaining close communication.
Regional Stability and Shared Priorities
The ministers exchanged views on pressing regional issues:
- Iran: Both sides emphasized the importance of restraint and dialogue following recent tensions between Israel and Iran. Japan reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue.
- Gaza: Minister Iwaya reiterated Japan’s support for humanitarian efforts and the Two-State Solution. Prince Faisal welcomed Japan’s consistent stance.
- Syria: Japan and Saudi Arabia agreed on the need for a peaceful transition and respect for Syria’s sovereignty, encouraging reconciliation through dialogue.
Indo-Pacific and Global Cooperation
The conversation also touched on developments in the Indo-Pacific region. Both ministers agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and enhance coordination on international platforms.
