CANBERRA, August 5, 2025 — Japan has officially signed a landmark agreement to supply Australia with next-generation warships in a massive A$10 billion ($6.5 billion USD) deal, redefining Tokyo’s role in regional defense.
Under the pact, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will deliver 11 Mogami-class stealth frigates to bolster the Royal Australian Navy. These vessels will phase out the aging ANZAC-class fleet and reinforce Australia’s maritime readiness amid growing regional instability.
🔧 Build & Capabilities
- 3 frigates to be built in Japan
- 8 frigates assembled in Western Australia, fueling jobs and local manufacturing
- Each ship equipped with:
- 32 vertical launch systems for precision missile strikes
- AI-powered systems that reduce crew size to just 90
🛡️ Strategic Milestone
This deal marks Japan’s largest-ever military export—a powerful statement as it steps further from its pacifist postwar doctrine. Both Japan and Australia are tightening defense ties in response to heightened tensions in the Indo-Pacific, especially concerning China’s growing military presence.
The frigates bring advanced capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and surface combat, boasting stealth and modular adaptability for future upgrades.
🤝 Expanding Alliances
This agreement dovetails with Australia’s broader defense strategy, aligning with its commitments under the AUKUS pact alongside the United States and the UK. It also elevates Japan’s position as a reliable defense partner and supplier for Western allies navigating a new regional security landscape.
