Gyeongju Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit, marking her first summit-level engagement with China since taking office. The leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, trade, and pressing regional security concerns.

Reaffirming Strategic Partnership

President Xi congratulated Prime Minister Takaichi on her appointment. Both leaders agreed to promote a “Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests” and emphasized the need for constructive and stable ties. Takaichi stressed the importance of reducing tensions and enhancing cooperation, especially in areas where concerns persist.

Trade and Economic Dialogue

The leaders welcomed the resumption of Chinese imports of Japanese aquatic products and committed to implementing the “Shared Recognition” agreement announced in September 2024. Takaichi urged China to lift remaining restrictions on agricultural and aquatic goods from 10 Japanese prefectures and called for progress on beef import negotiations.

They also discussed potential collaboration in:

Prime Minister Takaichi raised serious concerns over:

She called for improved crisis communication between defense authorities and demanded the release of detained Japanese nationals in China. Takaichi also reiterated Japan’s position on:

  • Peace across the Taiwan Strait
  • Human rights issues in Hong Kong and Xinjiang
  • Tensions in the South China Sea

Regional Stability

The leaders exchanged views on North Korea, including the longstanding abductions issue. Both sides acknowledged the importance of diplomatic dialogue and crisis management mechanisms.
