Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid a diplomatic visit to Ethiopia to take part in the United Nations Food Systems Summit held in Addis Ababa. Co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy, the summit spotlighted urgent global challenges in food security, sustainable agriculture, and international development.
Meloni addressed the opening session and held high-level meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President William Ruto. Her visit also included stops to meet humanitarian workers, members of the Italian religious community, and a symbolic journey to Lake Boye in Jimma — a site tied to redevelopment efforts under Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa.
The summit brought together political leaders, civil society groups, and development agencies aiming to reshape food systems in vulnerable regions. Italy’s leadership role emphasized its growing commitment to strategic cooperation and long-term investment across the African continent.
