Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a strong response to judicial proceedings targeting three of her cabinet members, calling the move “absurd” and reaffirming her leadership over the government’s decisions.

The case stems from the controversial deportation of Libyan official Osama Njeem Almasri, wanted by the International Criminal Court. After a six-month investigation—twice the legal limit—the Court of Ministers dismissed charges against Meloni herself but requested authorization to proceed against Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano.

🧾 Meloni’s Defense

The court stated that Meloni was not informed in advance and did not participate in the alleged criminal program. Meloni rejected this claim, saying:

It is claimed that two ministers and an undersecretary delegated by me acted on such a serious matter without sharing their decisions with me. That thesis is absurd.

She emphasized that her administration operates as a unified team and that all major decisions are made collectively:

Every choice—especially one this important—is agreed upon. It’s absurd to ask that Piantedosi, Nordio, and Mantovano go to trial, and not me before them.

Meloni also defended the government’s actions as necessary for national security and confirmed she will stand alongside the three officials in Parliament during the vote on whether to proceed with charges.

🧭 Broader Implications

The Almasri case has sparked debate over executive accountability and intelligence oversight in Italy. Critics question the transparency of the deportation process, while supporters argue the government acted decisively to protect citizens.
