Washington, D.C. — 12 August 2025
President Donald J. Trump has initiated a sweeping federal law enforcement operation aimed at curbing violent crime in the nation’s capital. The move fulfills a key campaign promise to “Make D.C. Safe Again,” following months of rising public concern over safety in the city.
The initiative, launched through an executive order, establishes the “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force”, which coordinates federal and local law enforcement efforts across high-traffic areas such as the National Mall, Union Station, and Rock Creek Park. Agencies involved include the FBI, DEA, ATF, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Park Police.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “There will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. beginning Thursday night.” The operation began with a seven-day deployment of over 120 federal officers, with the option to extend as needed.
The executive order also calls for:
- Enhanced federal prosecutorial policies to ensure pretrial detention of dangerous offenders
- Maximum enforcement of immigration laws in the D.C. area
- Increased patrols in tourist zones and known crime hotspots
President Trump has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to restoring safety and order in Washington, referencing the city’s struggles with crime in numerous campaign speeches. “We’re going to clean it up, beautify it, and make it the most secure capital in the world,” he said earlier this year.
The task force’s efforts come amid heightened scrutiny of local governance and calls for stronger public safety measures. While some critics question the federal intervention, supporters argue it’s a necessary step to protect residents, lawmakers, and visitors.
