In a major leap toward sustainable urban mobility, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the province’s latest electric bus service, now operational across Wazirabad and Gujranwala. The initiative marks a transformative step in Pakistan’s green transport vision, offering clean, affordable, and inclusive travel options to thousands of daily commuters.

⚡ A Greener Commute for Punjab

The newly launched electric buses are:

– Zero-emission and fully electric, reducing urban air pollution.

– Equipped with modern amenities including air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, and mobile charging ports.

– Inclusive by design, offering free rides to women, students, senior citizens, and differently-abled passengers.

– Strategically routed to connect key urban and suburban zones across both districts.

This rollout aligns with Punjab’s broader commitment to climate-conscious infrastructure and low-carbon public transport. Charging stations have been installed to ensure uninterrupted service, while safety features like CCTV and dedicated compartments for women enhance passenger confidence.

🏛️ Leadership Behind the Vision

The rollout of Punjab’s eco-friendly electric bus service in Wazirabad and Gujranwala is part of a broader provincial initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who has prioritized climate-conscious mobility across urban centers. Her administration’s commitment to sustainable transport is reflected in the province-wide deployment of electric buses.

Supporting this vision, Bilal Akbar Khan, Punjab’s Minister for Transport, has overseen policy execution with a focus on accessibility and environmental impact, while Imran Sikandar Baloch, Secretary Transport, has ensured technical precision and district-level coordination.

Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister, played a key advocacy role in bringing attention to Wazirabad’s inclusion—engaging with provincial leadership to prioritize the city’s needs.
Bilal Farooq Tarar, former MPA and current nominee for NA-66 Wazirabad, also contributed significantly by amplifying local demands and facilitating dialogue between community stakeholders and the provincial government.

On the ground, Waqar Ahmad Cheema, sitting MPA from PP-35 Wazirabad-I and Chairperson of the Mines & Minerals Committee, has actively supported the project’s implementation, reinforcing civic access and regional connectivity.
Mir Mazhar Bashir, City President of the ruling party , ensured municipal alignment and public engagement—helping translate provincial vision into local momentum.

Together, these leaders enabled Wazirabad to benefit swiftly from a province-wide initiative, turning policy into public service with precision and purpose.

📈 Regional Impact and Future Expansion

The electric bus service is expected to benefit over 100,000 commuters daily, easing traffic congestion and lowering fuel dependency. With Gujranwala’s metro bus system also in the pipeline, Punjab is rapidly emerging as a regional pioneer in sustainable transport.

This initiative not only improves daily life for residents but also contributes to Pakistan’s climate goals and urban resilience. As the service expands to other districts, it sets a new benchmark for clean mobility in South Asia.
