James Gunn’s Superman has officially become the first superhero film of 2025 to cross the $600 million mark at the global box office, offering a much-needed win for DC Studios. With $343.6 million earned domestically and $256 million overseas, the film is now the highest-grossing comic book movie of the year so far.

This milestone marks a strong debut for Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership at DC Studios, especially after a string of underwhelming releases from the DC Extended Universe. Despite the success, Superman hasn’t entirely escaped the shadow of superhero fatigue, which continues to challenge the genre’s dominance worldwide.

The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with a supporting cast that includes Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, and Nathan Fillion. Critics and audiences have responded positively, helping it outperform Marvel’s 2025 slate, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World.

Still, Superman faces stiff competition from unexpected hits like F1: The Movie and animated blockbusters such as How to Train Your Dragon and Ne Zha II. Whether Gunn’s reboot can climb past Man of Steel or The Batman remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a promising start to DC’s new era.
