Governor Kathy Hochul has extended the swimming suspension at three major Atlantic Ocean beaches on Long Island—Jones Beach, Robert Moses, and Hither Hills State Parks—following severe damage caused by Hurricane Erin.
Despite the storm having passed, hazardous surf conditions, rip currents, and coastal flooding persist. Lifeguards and state park officials have reported significant beach erosion and high tide levels, prompting ongoing floodwater assessments and safety monitoring.
“Safety is our top priority,” said Governor Hochul. “We’re working to restore access, but swimming remains off-limits until conditions improve.”
State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons praised the swift response of lifeguards and park staff, urging visitors to follow all safety directives as recovery efforts continue.
The suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
