A devastating accident in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region has left five people dead and 24 others injured after a suspension bridge cable snapped, sending several individuals plunging from the structure.

The incident occurred around 6:18 p.m. local time in the Xiata Scenic Area, nestled within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture—a destination famed for its dramatic mountain landscapes and natural allure.

Local authorities have since shut down the scenic area and launched a full investigation into the cause of the cable failure. Emergency crews responded swiftly, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical care.

The tragedy, officially reported on August 7 by Chinese state media, has reignited concerns over tourist site safety standards across the region. Officials are now under pressure to reassess infrastructure integrity at popular attractions to prevent future disasters.
