New York,UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued an urgent appeal for a ceasefire in Sudan, where escalating violence between rival military factions has triggered a humanitarian catastrophe and displaced millions.
Speaking at UN Headquarters, Guterres condemned the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, calling it “senseless” and warning that the country is on the brink of collapse. He urged both parties to silence the guns, allow unrestricted humanitarian access, and prioritize the protection of civilians.
The Secretary-General also called on regional and international actors to intensify diplomatic efforts and support peace initiatives led by the African Union and IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development).
According to UN agencies, over 5 million people have been displaced, and acute food insecurity is rising amid attacks on aid convoys and medical facilities. Guterres emphasized that the world must not look away, and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Sudanese people through coordinated relief and peacebuilding efforts.
