UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who succumbed to injuries following a violent attack in June.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Guterres extended heartfelt condolences to the senator’s family and the people of Colombia. He urged Colombian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the June 7 assault and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The Secretary-General also emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic processes in Colombia, calling on officials to guarantee the safety of all candidates ahead of the upcoming national elections.

This statement comes amid rising political tensions in Colombia, where concerns over electoral violence and political intimidation have drawn international attention.
