New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning to world leaders, declaring that the planet is “out of time” to prevent climate catastrophe unless urgent, transformative action is taken before COP30 in 2025.
Speaking at UN Headquarters, Guterres called for a climate solidarity pact that accelerates the phase-out of fossil fuels, boosts renewable energy investment, and delivers on climate finance commitments to developing nations. He emphasized that current pledges fall dangerously short of the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement.
The Secretary-General urged governments to submit enhanced nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by COP30, and to align public and private finance with net-zero goals. He also called for an end to subsidies for oil, gas, and coal, labeling them “a betrayal of future generations.”
Guterres’s remarks come amid record-breaking global temperatures, extreme weather events, and mounting pressure from civil society for climate justice. He stressed that COP30 must be a turning point—not just in rhetoric, but in real-world impact.
