New York, The United Nations has strongly condemned a recent Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar calling it an “alarming escalation” that threatens fragile ceasefire and hostage negotiations in Gaza. The strike, which occurred on September 9, targeted a residential compound reportedly housing members of Hamas’s political bureau, including the son of chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.

Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN’s top political affairs official, briefed the Security Council on Thursday, warning that the attack could open “a new and perilous chapter” in the ongoing conflict. The strike killed several Hamas affiliates and a Qatari security officer, though Hamas leaders reportedly survived.

“This action undermines mediation efforts and weakens confidence in the mechanisms we rely on for conflict resolution,” DiCarlo stated, urging all parties to exercise restraint and recommit to diplomacy.

Israel claimed responsibility, citing retaliation for a deadly Hamas-led attack in Jerusalem on September 8. The move drew condemnation from Qatar, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, all of whom expressed concern over further escalation.

The Security Council issued a press statement reaffirming support for Qatar’s sovereignty and its key role in mediation efforts alongside Egypt and the United States. The Council emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, hostage release, and protection of civilians in Gaza.
